Dutch Van Der Linde's History

Story

“ Leader of a large band of outlaws and renegades. Idealist, anarchist, charismatic, educated and experienced, he nevertheless seems to be beginning to show signs of weakness in the face of the advent of the modern world. ”

Dutch was born in 1855 to an English mother named Greta and a Dutch father somewhere near Philadelphia. His father participated in the Civil War on the side of the Union, he lost his life during the Battle of Gettysburg. Dutch therefore develops a fierce hatred against the southerners. At the age of 15 , he left the family home, in particular because of his disobedience and the disagreements he had with his mother. Greta died in 1881 and was buried in Blackwater Cemetery , which Dutch would not learn until years later. Dutch dreams of a free and independent life. To achieve his dreams, he undertakes a life of crime. During the 1870s [1] he met a crook named Hosea Matthewsin a camp on the way to Chicago. Both try to steal from each other before realizing their respective talents. They then decide together to create the Band of Dutch van der Linde .

Sometime later, Dutch and Hosea reunite in the town of Kettering, Ohio. They pose as international merchants and manage to defraud twelve locals for a total of $300. The victims thought they were acquiring Portuguese products. The two men are caught and arrested by Sheriff Carmichael. On March 9, 1877, Dutch and Hosea planned an escape, which they carried out.

Later that year, Dutch and Hosea meet an orphan, Arthur Morgan . They decide to take the child under their wings and teach him to read, write, hunt, shoot and ride a horse. Arthur will be the first real member of the band. Around the same time, Dutch begins a romantic affair with a woman named Susan Grimshaw , who in turn becomes a member of the gang. However, this relationship ends when Dutch meets another woman he falls head over heels in love with, Annabelle .

The gang initially team up with Colm O'Driscoll , but things take a turn for the worse when Dutch kills the latter's brother who, in return, retaliates by murdering Annabelle . A considerable hatred then arises between the two men.

In 1885, Dutch came across a group of settlers from Illinois who lynched a 12-year-old child, John Marston , who had robbed them shortly before. Dutch saves the young boy and, as he had done for Arthur, he educates him. Dutch says John and Arthur are his favorite "sons".

In 1887, Dutch leads the majority of the gang to rob a bank. Arthur and Hosea participate in the robbery. At two in the morning, the three enter the building named Lee and Hoyt. The gang steals over $5,000 in gold. After the heist, they donate money to a slum and orphanage. They then consider themselves as 'robins des bois'. It is during this period that Dutch becomes a wanted man and has a bounty on his head.

In 1893, Dutch encountered a war veteran named Marion Williamson , who attempted to rob him. However, Dutch simply laughs in his face, returning him and then Dutch invites him into the gang. Despite his moderate intelligence, he remains loyal to the gang.

In 1895, Dutch stole several hens, a Mexican named Javier Escuella then tried to do the same. Alone and hungry, Dutch feeds him, warms him up and brings him into the gang. Javier becomes one of the most loyal members.

The gang commits many misdeeds across the American West, gaining some notoriety. Dutch implies that the gang steals and kills for a higher interest, while forming a family of which all members were "Dutch's sons", "brothers". John would later consider that these justifications were actually excuses to steal and kill with impunity and make sense of their dishonorable actions.

In 1894, a prostitute named Abigail Roberts joined the gang. Although she then has sex with most of the gang members, she falls in love with John. From their union was born John Jr., known as Jack . The band becomes the young boy's family, which considers its members as uncles and aunts.

In 1899 more people joined the band, including Charles Smith and Micah Bell . The latter then has the idea of doing a big coup: rob a ferry in the town of Blackwater . This heist would then be known as the Blackwater Massacre . The gang steals $150,000, but the situation turns sour when law enforcement officials , primarily the Pinkerton National Detective Agency , come close to capturing the outlaw gang. In a panic, Dutch kills an innocent woman, Heidi McCourt .. John is injured in the leg, Mac and Jenny die, Davey is seriously injured, and Sean is captured by law enforcement. The surviving gang members manage to escape. Dutch loses much of the stolen money in the leak, but manages to hide the rest in a secret location in Blackwater.

Red Dead Redemption II

Chapter 1: Colter

Relentlessly pursued by the Federals, Dutch's band went into exile north to Big Valley and as far east as the Ambarino Mountains . Davey dies of his injuries there.

As heavy snow falls in the mountains, the group searches for a place where they can take shelter and set up camp from their caravans. They eventually find an abandoned village where they temporarily set up camp. The goal is to hide from the authorities, the hostile terrain being able to temporarily repel the hunt which practically all are subject to. Dutch tries to reassure his troops.

In particular, he leaves with Arthur and Micah to inspect a house that the latter has spotted, and which seems to be inhabited. Dutch uses his oratory skills to get those in the house out: they turn out to be the O'Driscoll gang , his old enemy. Micah sees that there is a corpse in a cart in front of the house, and the situation escalates. A gunfight breaks out, which turns to Dutch, Arthur and Micah's advantage as they search the house for food. The newcomer to the gang finds a woman, the widow of the dead man in front of the house: Sadie Adler . Dutch, considerate, puts a blanket over her shoulders and brings her back to camp.

Dutch then led an offensive on the O'Driscoll camp. He lets Colm slip away but eliminates most of his men present. They capture Kieran Duffy , a member of the O'Driscolls. Hosea then returns from the countryside: he has found a new place suitable for setting up camp.

Chapter 2: Horseshoe Overlook

After arriving at the Horseshoe Overlook encampment , Dutch appears to have a complicated relationship with Molly O'Shea, his companion. He directs several operations in Valentine , a nearby town, and notably organizes the robbery of a train belonging to the company of Leviticus Cornwall . This will cause many problems for the gang: the industrial magnate will personally put the Pinkerton on Dutch's trail and will try to confront him with Valentine.

Kieran saves Arthur's life and is freed by the gang who, while keeping an eye on him, decide to stay and prove that he is more of a son of Dutch than an O'Driscoll. Meanwhile, Arthur is approached by two Pinkerton agents, Andrew Milton and Edgar Ross . They offer to bring van der Linde back to them in exchange for his freedom, which Arthur refuses and hastens to repeat to Dutch. The gang must then quickly leave the area.

Chapter 3: Clemens Point

When Dutch's band is forced to settle near the town of Rhodes , at the encampment of Clemens Point , John continues to be more or less active in the affairs of the group and Sadie Adler , found in the mountains previously, joins the band.

Dutch and his cronies get involved in a long-standing family feud in Rhodes, with the goal of stealing their wealth. Unfortunately, the two families play the gang: Sean is killed by the Grays and Jack is captured by the Braithwaites .

Mad with rage, the members of Dutch's gang rush to Braithwaite Manor to recover Jack and eliminate anyone who gets in their way. Abigail is worried sick, but John manages to keep his cool thanks to Dutch channeling him. The gang slaughters the Braithwaites, except for the patriarch, Catherine . With Jack nowhere to be found, Dutch questions him and she reveals that she passed him on to an influential figure in the town of Saint Denis : Angelo Bronte . The gang sets the house on fire and leaves.

This episode is another clue to Dutch's slow but sure descent into madness. As he channels the anger of John who wishes to kill everyone because of his son's kidnapping, he rapes Catherine Braithwaite and insults her. If he spares her, he however sets fire to the house before the band leaves for the surroundings of Saint Denis .

Chapter 4: Shady Belle

Determined to recover Jack and bring him back safe and sound, the gang sets out for an abandoned house that Arthur had spotted during his wanderings: Shady Belle . John and Arthur eliminate its occupants and dump their corpses in the swamps. The gang settles there and Dutch, John and Arthur manage to meet Angelo Bronte after making inquiries in town. Bronte says he does indeed detain young Marston, but only intends to return them if they help him deal with a problem of grave robbers in the Saint Denis cemetery .

John and Arthur sort it out while Dutch talks to Bronte. He keeps his word and gives them back Jack, who seems to have been well treated during his stay. John thanks Arthur for his help. Their relationship gets better from there.

Dutch was injured in the head during a confrontation between some members of the gang and law enforcement officials from Saint Denis . It is possible that this event will drive him even crazier than he already was.

Kieran, who has been missing for a few days, is seen on his horse, decapitated, returning to Shady Belle. Dutch realizes this is a message from the O'Driscolls, who immediately attack the house. The band pushes back the enemy after a difficult confrontation.

Trouble ensues when in Saint Denis , Bronte tricks Dutch by telling him about a robbery opportunity: the Saint Denis tram station . The station's vaults are empty, and the law enforcement officials fall straight to the tape. Dutch realizes that Bronte has sold the gang to law enforcement, no doubt worried that his influence will spread to Saint Denis , which the Italian intended to control from all sides. Dutch's cruelty continues to surface when he drowns him and throws his corpse to the crocodiles. John begins to doubt Dutch's sanity...

Subsequently, he organized a major robbery of the Lemoyne National Bank . Again, the case is a total fiasco. The Pinkerton detectives and all the law enforcement officials in town arrive, capturing Abigail (who manages to get away) and Hosea. This is used by Agents Milton and Ross to force Dutch, John, Arthur and the rest of the gang members present in the bank to surrender. Hosea is then executed by Milton, and the rest of the gang flees through the roof. Lenny is also killed, and John is sent to Sisika Penitentiary , located on an island off Saint Denis .

Hosea's death is also a milestone in Dutch's dementia, as it was his best friend.

The surviving members of the band, apart from Charles Smith who is creating a diversion to allow the others to flee, board a boat at the port. With his destination unknown, Dutch tries to sympathize with the Captain by giving him a portion of the money stolen from the bank in exchange for not telling the authorities that they have stowaways on board.

One night, Arthur is separated from the rest of the gang as the ship faces disaster and is sinking.

Chapter 5: Guarma

Dutch, Bill Williamson Javier, Micah and Arthur then arrive in Guarma , an island in the Caribbean troubled between a powerful dictator, Alberto Fussar , and rebels led by Hercule Fontaine . Javier is captured by Fussar, but Dutch, Micah and Arthur manage to escape thanks to the intervention of Hercules and his men. They release Javier, not without a new episode of insanity from Dutch who purely and simply murders the guide who leads them to Javier. Dutch, Micah and Arthur then work with Hercules to reduce Fussar's influence on the island. In exchange, the rebel offers them a boat which they use to return to the United States and find their family.

Chapter 6: Beaver Hollow

While John is imprisoned, Molly O'Shea, who had been missing for several months, reappears at the Beaver Hollow camp . Very drunk, she says she betrayed the gang by supposedly telling agents Milton and Ross where the gang was and what hits they were planning. Mad with rage, Dutch is on the brink of killing her. It is ultimately Susan Grimshaw who kills her.

Later, Arthur and Sadie Adler wish to break John out of prison, pleading his case with Dutch. He refuses, at least for the moment. He says he has a plan, but time passes and Arthur and Sadie disobey their leader, freeing John. Dutch is furious that Arthur, one of his most loyal brothers in arms, disobeyed him and took initiatives behind his back. He has also repeatedly questioned Dutch's decisions.

Micah Bell uses this situation to gradually turn Dutch against Arthur and John. Micah's influence over Dutch worries them, the latter enjoying the blind loyalty the former has for him. Arthur, suffering from tuberculosis, realizes several things about the lives of all the members of the gang. Arthur has, in secret, a long conversation with John about the way forward for the gang. John now having a family, he must bring it to safety since Dutch has gone completely mad. Arthur tries to explain to the leader of the band that John and his family deserve to leave, but Dutch refuses and loses faith in Arthur even more.

As the band, and notably Arthur, are brought in to help the Indians of the Wapiti Indian Reservation , Dutch notices that their chief Pluie-Attante 's son , Eagle-Qui-Vole , is in deep disagreement with his father about how whose industrialization of their lands must be fought. While the leader advocates a peaceful approach, Flying Eagle wants war with the white man. Dutch uses the Indian boy's hatred to carry out repeated attacks on the American military . During one of these clashes, Arthur Morgan and Dutch fight to recover bonds in the factory of Leviticus Cornwall. The first is injured by a hot water pipe and, while he begs Dutch to come to his aid, the latter leaves him in the hands of the American army. Flying Eagle saves Arthur and dies of his wounds. When Morgan confronts Dutch about abandoning her, he says he would never abandon her.

This event is further proof of the state of madness in which van der Linde sinks, ready to put his brothers in arms in danger for a cause that is not theirs and ready to abandon them to the enemy.

The last hit of Dutch's gang in its original formation is then the robbery of a train belonging to the United States Army . Arthur and John jump on the back of the train and progress to the armored car containing the money. Unfortunately, John is shot by a soldier and falls off the train. Dutch, who is galloping alongside the train, then says to take care of John. In reality, John is left for dead by Dutch who abandons him and makes his brothers in arms believe that he is dead.

Abigail is later captured by Agent Milton at Van Horn Trading Post . Arthur and Sadie leave to free her. The first reaches Abigail but is tricked by Milton, who reveals to her that Molly never betrayed the gang, revealing the traitor's true identity to Arthur. Milton is killed by Abigail, who then thinks, like everyone else, that John is dead. Arthur sends Sadie and Abigail to their side, sending them to a place where they will have to find Tilly and Jack. Abigail gives the key to the safe in the cave at Beaver Hollow Camp to Arthur, giving him the location where Dutch had hidden the money from the train attack.

Arthur returns to the camp to confront Micah and reveal the truth to Dutch, as other gang members and associates have abandoned Dutch in the meantime. John, wounded but alive, arrives at the same time, surprising all his former brothers in arms present. He tells Dutch that he left him for dead, which Dutch denies. Arthur reveals that Micah is the real traitor and that he sold the gang to Pinkerton by keeping her informed of the gang's next moves since their return from Guarma.

Dutch does not believe Arthur, when he tells the truth, and finds that it is this one who has gone to save John behind his back, that it is this one who has been doubting his decisions for some time now. He no longer deserves his trust. John sides with Arthur while Bill, Javier, Micah and his friends Cleet and Joe remain loyal to Dutch; sealing the death of the soundtrack.

The situation degenerates when the Pinkerton, led by Edgar Ross, arrives at the camp. As Dutch and his allies slip away on their side, John and Arthur are forced to retreat into the cave and flee up the mountain. The second, very weakened by illness, then has the choice of going back to get the money for the attack on the train at the camp thanks to the key given by Abigail, or helping John to take shelter.

Arthur helps John escape

Arthur goes back to get the money

If Arthur helps John escape, Dutch finds the former after his fight with Micah. If Arthur's level of Honor is high, this one, at the point of death, implores Dutch to remember all these years spent together, wasted by the traitor that is Micah. Dutch then appears upset at Arthur's condition, as Micah asks him to leave and let him die. Dutch then leaves on his side leaving Arthur and Micah. Arthur exhales as the sun rises.

While Arthur's Honor level is low, Dutch is still torn between watching one of his most loyal brothers-in-arms die before his eyes and his recent disappointment in him. He leaves on his side, and Micah completes Arthur with a bullet in the head, bursting out laughing.

Epilogue, Part 2: Beecher's Hope

After the events of 1899, Dutch's gang consists of Dutch, Micah, Bill and Javier. For reasons still unclear, Bill and Javier go their separate ways. Dutch then continues to collaborate with Micah. They both recover the money from the Blackwater heist.

In 1907, Dutch and Micah established themselves with their men at Mount Hagen . John, Sadie and Charles track down Micah and confront him after killing his men. As an injured Sadie traps Micah, Dutch comes out of the cabin and points both guns at Sadie and John. Micah takes Sadie as a human shield and John asks Dutch to listen to reason, to put Micah out of harm's way, who betrayed them and precipitated the gang's downfall. Dutch stays quiet for most of the rally, then unexpectedly shoots Micah who is finished off by John. The latter thanks his former boss, who passes in front of him, glaring at him and leaves alone on his side.

Dutch's New Band

Between 1907 and 1911, Dutch settled in the West Elizabeth area and used the hatred of the surrounding Native Americans to rally them to his cause and form a new band of Dutch. He then went completely mad.

Red Dead Redemption

When Bill Williamson is killed in Nuevo Paraíso , Edgar Ross tells John Marston that there is still one member of his old band to be captured. And it is Dutch. He was apparently located around Blackwater , somewhere in Cochinay . Marston joins the Federal Bureau to find Dutch, so that he can find his family , which he has been deprived of since his return to New Austin . John first goes to Professor MacDougal , whose friend, Nastas , says he knows the location of Dutch's lair. Thus, John follows the Native American to Cochinay , in the region ofTall Trees . John kills a sentry, placed on the heights of Cochinay, and takes his binoculars from the fisherman to observe the activity of the sector. Dutch shows up, killing a lawman . A shot is suddenly fired, hitting Marston's fisherman's binoculars, who passes out.

Dutch then sends his men to attack Blackwater, and, along with the government, John repulses each assault. But during one of these assaults, Marston holds Dutch, who takes a young girl hostage, in a building. John tries to reason with him, but his former leader kills the poor girl in front of the law enforcement officials present and those of his former friend, and flees. Professor MacDougal is then threatened with death. He is escorted by John to Manzanita Post , where he takes a train to Yale, where he is expected to teach.

Later, Archer Fordham and Ross decide to attack Cochinay to eradicate Dutch, but also his band. Along with John, and the United States Army , they launch an assault on Dutch and his gang. But the latter tries to flee, and John pursues him on the heights of Cochinay. Eventually, Dutch comes to the edge of a cliff, with John facing him. There are no more escapes. After speaking with Marston, who had been his protege at the time, he commits suicide by dropping off the cliff. Once downstairs, John finds Ross, who shoots Dutch's corpse, justifying this as "a plus on the report".
