My all-time favorite is A Song of Ice and Fire by George RR Martin. The world building and complex characters really grabbed me and I couldn't put the books down. I consider Batman to be the greatest comic book character of all time. He has no superpowers, but still manages to fight crime using his intelligence and gadgets, which makes him more relatable.
