Nicol Bolas (Pre-Mending)

Nicol

Magic: the Gathering

Nicol Bolas's History

Nicol Bolas was the last of the Elder Dragons born onto Dominaria roughly 25,000 years ago and soon set his sights on domination of the fledgling plane. This ultimately resulted in the cataclysmic Elder Dragon War that left the plane devastated, most of his siblings dead and Bolas's spark ignited. Bolas would then set out into the multiverse with his sights set on even greater power.

Bolas's travels would end up seeing him confront other Planeswalkers, the first being the Demonic Leviathan. Their battle reduced the continent of Madara to a third of its size and lasted a month with Bolas ultimately triumphing. His next confrontation would be against his brother Ugin, who was also a Planeswalker. This intense battle raged across plane after plane before Bolas laid his brother low on Tarkir. Ugin was dead in this timeline, but would be revived through time travel later.

After these triumphs, Nicol Bolas returned to Dominaria and conquered the Madaran Empire (which rested on a crossroads of Blue, Black and Red mana leylines), becoming its God-Emperor for the next 400 years. While here, he rested and plotted before ultimately being severed from his physical body by Tetsuo Umezawa who went on to battle and defeat the dragon on the Meditation plane where Bolas could not wield his power. Bolas was not dead, however, and waited patiently as a shade for his perfect moment.

This moment came as Teferi was attempting to seal all of the time rifts on Dominaria, one of which was located at the sight of Bolas's battle with the Leviathan. Using this newfound knowledge, Bolas was able to regain his physical form and resume his machinations. Before this could be accomplished, he first had to face down the Planeswalker Leshrac, who seemingly had the upper hand as their battle raged across several planes. This was however, just a ruse and Bolas quickly turned the tides on Leshrac, tossing him into the Madaran rift, seemingly killing Leshrac and sealing the rift.

After this, Bolas left Dominaria and soon after the Mending occured, seeing Bolas's power dramatically reduced. This would not be the end for the great dragon, as he would instigate many plots to regain his former glory...
