Phoenix's History
On Earth-696, Magneto decided to wage war on the X-Men and Avengers and killed Charles Xavier. In a moment of panic and anger, Jean Grey's latent abilities, which were suppressed by Xavier, reemerged and she shut down Magneto's mind. However, this led to the creation of
Onslaught, a psionic entity made of the Magneto and Jean's worst sides.
Onslaught possessed Jean and posed as the Phoenix, which never came to Earth to possess Jean in this reality. As the Phoenix,
Onslaught rallied the X-Men through a progressive mental manipulation into enforcing a brutal stance on the fight for mutant-kind, with the secret objective of acquiring more power to ascend to a Cosmic Being by draining the minds of humanity and then conquering the multiverse one reality at a time.
Meanwhile, the
Phoenix of Earth-80777, who, after bringing peace to her own home reality, took it upon herself to protect the wider multiverse as well, detected
Onslaught of Earth-696 and the threat it posed to the multiverse.
Phoenix enlisted the Original X-Men of Earth-616 to combat
Onslaught. When that failed, she formed a team of multiversal Wolverines to complete the task. Betrayed by
Logan of Earth-807128 as he literally stabbed her in the back with his claws as she was about to battle
Onslaught,
Phoenix surrendered the power of the
Phoenix Force of Earth-80777 to
Onslaught. This
Phoenix Force which had bonded harmoniously with
Jean Grey of Earth-80777 calmed the fears and hate of both Magneto and Jean Grey of Earth-696's
Onslaught. This is exactly what
Logan had suspected and hoped would happen when he betrayed
Phoenix. Calmed and no longer on a quest to conquer the multiverse, the Phoenix possessed Onslaught set out to peacefully explore the multiverse.
