The Book Of Vanitas

What is The Book Of Vanitas?

History of The Book Of Vanitas

It is a cursed grimoire originating from the bedtime story of the Vampire of the Blue Moon, said to have been created out of the Vampire's desire for revenge against their brethren, the Vampires of the Crimson Moon, for shunning them. It is imbued with a great power, dubbed "an analytical engine in the shape of a book," able to interfere with Vampires' True Names and is rumored and feared to spread Malnomen through the race. The Book of Vanitas is described to be "a blue leather cover and jet-black pages, a clockwork grimoire linked to a silver chain." According to Luna, the blue stone embedded on the Books' cover is Astermite, although not an ordinary one. It's a special stone with higher purity and great power, known as "Blue Tear Stone" or "Divine Tear Stone," polished and cut into a circular shape. According to legend, the Book of Vanitas were created by Luna, the Vampire of the Blue Moon. Contrary to the legend, the Vampire of the Blue Moon actually created multiple Books of Vanitas. Only two Books of Vanitas have been shown thus far in the manga, so it is currently unknown as to whether there are more than two Books in existence. At some point in the past, Moreau acquired two of the Books of Vanitas through a certain unnamed channel. He quickly realized that it was impossible to open the books without being one of the Kin of the Blue Moon, and began running experiments to manufacture pseudo- Kin of the Blue Moon. Moreau used Vanitas and Mikhail in the final form of this experiment, injecting them with the blood of the Vampire of the Blue Moon and strapping them to a machine designed to temporarily turn them into Kin. Before the machine could start, the Vampire of the Blue Moon came to the lab and retrieved their books, destroying the lab in the process. While traveling with Vanitas and Mikhail, Luna taught the boys about the Books of Vanitas and their abilities. At some point before their death, Luna gave one of the Books to Mikhail and the other to Vanitas.
