Ultraman Tregear's History

Ultraman Tregear is an Ultraman who made his first appearance in Ultraman R/B The Movie as the main antagonist. He later becomes the main antagonist of the succeeding series, Ultraman Taiga. He was once Ultraman Taro's friend and a scientist on the Land of Light who created the Taiga Spark, but several disappointments and obstacles drove him down a dark path.

When Tregear was young, he attended the same class as Taro. Tregear initially didn't think much of him because he was popular for having famous parents. However, Taro approached him and they became friends. Out of curiosity, Tregear brought Taro to an off-limits area, locked behind bars. Tregear was unable to get in himself and manipulated Taro into breaking the two of them in. They then saw a pillar which played footage from the Ultimate Wars, and realized it was a tomb. They got in trouble at school the next day but Taro decided to stand up and admit their mistakes for the both of them, which Tregear secretly admired. Throughout their time in school, Taro became a symbol of light to Tregear, who continued to explore things such as night, darkness, loneliness, and fear, which he could only learn from the library, since the Land of Light had none of those. Tregear had written a poem of Taro, though he thought little of it beyond seeing Tregear's talent for poetry.

At some point, they had an adventure on Planet Tika-Du, where there were rumors of giant monsters. The rumors were confirmed to be true as they were attacked by monsters called Gagoze in a cave, though they also discovered a dome-like space. There, he discovered a sort of primordial soup of life and more importantly, indecipherable ancient cosmic writings, which intrigued Tregear. The monsters they fought released pink leech-like organisms that could assimilate the DNA of other lifeforms; Tregear immediately realized the threat if they were to assimilate them and leave the planet in the spaceship he and Taro arrived in. Having been caught by the creature, Tregear told Taro to save the villagers first and not hesitate in such a critical moment. Taro, not wanting anyone to be sacrificed, used his Ultra Dynamite to instantly burn away the giant monster and the substances within, and destroyed another one with his Strium Beam.

After graduating from school, Taro went on to become a member of the Inter Galactic Defense Force, making it through their training regimen. Tregear followed him and suffered through a hellish regime, simply because he didn't want to lose his friend. Unfortunately, he failed to make it in. Taro told him not to give up and that he could contribute in his own way, encouraging him to join the Space Science Technology Bureau instead. Tregear agreed and was employed under Ultraman Hikari.

Hikari managed to see Tregear's potential when working on the Astral Particle Conversion System, a device that could transform an Ultraman's particles to be taken into other creatures for multiversal travel purposes. Hikari also saw something dangerous within him, like a blue flame quietly burning. To complete his research, Tregear had to go across the universe and get information from other Ultras, but his permission was denied every time. He wanted to talk to Hikari, but found out that he had resigned and left to Planet Arb, out of guilt over his Life-Force Solidification invention being the cause of many attacks on the Land of Light. Seeing that even someone honored with Star Marks could get distressed, a faint shadow loomed over Tregear.

One day, Taro returned from Planet Earth and told Tregear about his experiences, and that he had become one of the Ultra Brothers. Taro told Tregear about his bonds with humans, though he had his doubts. Using Taro's advice to rely on bonds, Tregear managed to complete the machine he was working on, despite his skepticism on bonds. After miniaturizing the machine, Taro thought its name was too long. Tregear wanted to call it the Taro Spark, but Taro suggested that they name it for the next generation, giving it the name Taiga Spark, which Tregear agreed to. Taro also decided on giving this name to his child when he has one. Seeing Taro leave almost immediately hurt Tregear even more. He made another poem, this time about him wallowing in the darkness.

Tregear, saddened by Taro's absence, found that the Land of Light had little value to him. Every time they made better defenses, the enemy comes up with something else; the battles only escalate. Tregear finally understood Hikari's sorrow. He was offered the position of Deputy Director of the Space Science Technology Bureau, but he instead resigned and left the Land of Light. Disillusioned the idea of "light" being "justice" because of the Land of Light's history - the Ultimate Wars, the Revolt of Belial, and recently, Hikari's own fall to vengeance - he came to the conclusion that the Land of Light's ideals were only deceptions, waving their fists and calling it "justice" simply because they have the strength to do so, effectively making their ideals and enemies being two sides of the same coin.

Tregear flew over to Planet Tutuola, which was full of rubbish that was managed by the Interstellar Alliance. He saw a pool of organic matter, which reminded him of something similar he saw when he went adventuring with Taro. Seeking to ease his loneliness, Tregear created a slug-like life form similar to Namegon using the pool of organic matter. He named it "Snark", which translated into "Chibisuke" on the Land of Light. Snark ate and grew hundreds of meters tall; Tregear was unable to stop it by force when it was going to attack a city there. Tregear had exploited a bug in its DNA to rearrange its genetic structure, forcibly turning it into various different kinds of creatures while it shrieked in pain. In the end, Tregear shrunk Snark into a flower, which wilted and turned into dust. Out of guilt, Tregear left the planet. Some time later, Tregear learned that Taro had a son named Ultraman Taiga, which surprised him. As Taro went on with the path of light, Tregear sank into darkness. While investigating the times before the Land of Light came about and spread their "light", Tregear wandered the Milky Way and found the ruins of "chaos" from before the universe's creation.

Over Tregear's long journey, "light" and "darkness" lost their meaning. Tregear managed to decipher the ancient writings he had encountered on Planet Tika-Du long ago. Venturing to Planet Borges, Tregear sought to open up the "Abyss", which was sealed away to maintain the balance of the universe. He offered himself to the "Abyss", and sealed inside him an ancient "chaos" that granted him great power, abandoning his identity as an Ultraman. He used his newfound powers to interfere in many universes, such as giving crystallization powers to Murnau and encountered Greeza.

Over 1,300 years before the events of Ultraman R/B, Tregear had altered the DNA of Leugocyte, forcing the once-peaceful creature to go rampant, leading to its first battle with the three siblings from Planet Sanja. Tregear's name became associated with disasters and temptation in seven universes.

Tregear found out about Riku Asakura's origins and saw that he had an Alien Pegassa friend Pega, which he thought was strange. He decided to abduct them and place Pega within Gan-Q and hoped that Riku would kill his own friend and fall to the darkness, just like his father did. Throwing them into into R/B's universe, he summoned Gan-Q and Bemstar to wreak havoc in Ayaka City. Learning about Ultraman Rosso's ties with the Taro Crystal, Tregear decided to make Katsumi Minato his next target after finding out about his confusion on his identity and ambitions. Tregear then contacted Yukio Toi, helping him realize his dream of destroying the world he hated, corrupting him into Snake Darkness in the process and sending him to Planet Hostar 21. Later on, Tregear approached Katsumi, transporting him to the same planet after showing him a scene of Mecha Gomora rampaging. Tregear then left Katsumi alone while Snake Darkness arrived on Earth through one of his portals.

During the final battle, Tregear finally shows up to back up Snake Darkness and was surprised with Ultraman Rosso's return though he easily drives everyone into a corner even when Ultrawoman Grigio appeared. Tregear and Snake Darkness continued having the upper hand until the Minato siblings fused into Ultraman Gruebe, joining Riku who transformed into Ultimate Final once more. After the battle, Tregear was apparently destroyed by Geed's Wrecking Nova. However, in the post-credits, Tregear was revealed to have survived this experience and left Earth afterwards.

Tregear approached Ultra Dark-Killer at some point and requested him to create the Darkness Copies of the New Generation Heroes, for the sole purpose of "proving" the point that Darkness and Light are one and the same. While observing the ensuing fight of New Generation Heroes and League of Darkness in his Magical Space, Ultraman Ribut approaches him and prepares to apprehend the fallen Ultra. After a fight, Tregear revives the fallen Dark-Killer and Ultraman Zero Darkness, the former growing to gigantic size and going berserk due to his overflowing power. Tregear leaves Ribut to fight two Red Kings, saying that he will at least do him the favor of remembering his name. Once the New Generation Heroes had permanently destroyed Dark-Killer and regrouped with Zero, Tregear confronts the group and revealed that he was the mastermind behind these events, having orchestrated Grigio's capture so that Ultraman Gruebe could not be formed. He lets the New Generation Heroes know that he is going to destroy the Land of Light and Taro.

Tregear faces off against the New Generation Heroes near the Land of Light and easily defeats all of them through minefields before fighting Taro. The Tri-Squad arrived later and struck at Tregear several times, though he reduced them into particles before charging at an enraged Taro. Taro once again tried to reach out to his old friend, hoping to recover his light, but Tregear mocked the idea of light and bonds that eventually ended with both sides exploding from their Dynamite attacks.

Twelve years later, Tregear reappeared as the arch-nemesis of Ultraman Taiga and relentlessly targets him. While hunting down Taiga on Earth, he assumes the form of a man named Kirisaki, who calls down monsters such as Hellberus to do his bidding. He personally attacks Taiga simply to spite him and his human host Hiroyuki Kudo after Hiroyuki's former pet Guesra Chibisuke was spotted in Japanese waters. Tregear kills Chibisuke to further enrage Hiroyuki, before taking his leave. Tregear also turns Rento Kujo into his puppet to cause destruction as Galactron MK2, and hinders Ultraman Titas upon his return. Other than that, Tregear takes the chance to taunt and meddle with Ultraman Fuma after Darebolic (MB) is destroyed. At some point, he also hired Alien Gapiya Abel to get rid of Taiga and the Tri-Squad.

Tregear was surprised by Taiga's transformation into Photon-Earth and went to challenge him, finding out that Taiga had improved into a much more competent fighter. After a short battle, Tregear left, expecting nothing less of the son of Taro.

Secretly, Tregear had been allowing Taiga to collect and use the Kaiju Rings, which slowly corrupted his soul. As the darkness floods him, Taiga becomes more reckless in battle, as seen during his battles against Gigadelos and Skull Gomora. When enough darkness had accumulated within Taiga, Tregear takes the chance to corrupt him, shutting out Hiroyuki, Titas and Fuma in the process. Taiga becomes an unresponsive puppet which Tregear claims as his own partner, all just to spite Taro.

Hiroyuki sees Taiga in the darkness after he is knocked out by Kirisaki. Tregear suddenly appears and convinces Taiga to go further down the path of darkness, leading him to expel Hiroyuki from within himself. When Titas and Fuma tried to save him, Kirisaki summoned Hellberus and Night Fang from their Kaiju Rings to stop them, but Hiroyuki managed to get through and save Taiga, granting him his new form Tri-Strium. Enraged at the failure of his plan, Kirisaki transformed into Tregear to fight Taiga, but disappeared after being hit by the Tri-Strium Burst. Descending into a fit of madness, he develops a hatred towards Hiroyuki and started targeting him directly.

Kirisaki infiltrated the EGIS base and launched a mental attack on Pirika Asahikawa. He somehow sees a meteor-like monster flying through space by reading her mind, and set out to bring it to Earth. Tregear awakened the 'soul' of the planet, Ether, by using the drill on Alien Ghose' ship. This caused the Earth to give off a signal that brought the monster towards it.

Tregear revels in the destruction brought on by Woola, and admitted to Pirika that he cares not for 'light' and 'darkness' and simply wants everything to be destroyed. Pirika, now within Woola's core, sympathized with the monster. EGIS forms an alliance with Maguma and Markind to save Woola and the planet, relying on Taiga to fire his Strium Blaster at the monster as the final step. However, Tregear interfered and fought against the Tri-Squad, obstructing them and their last window of pulling the plan off. Woola tried to help the Tri-Squad after recognizing them as allies, but easily gets shoved aside by Tregear. Tregear made the mistake of firing a dark energy sphere at Taiga, which he redirects to Woola using the Wide Taiga Shot. Woola ate both attacks and its body is destroyed, while its core floated upwards and dissipated into a glittering light that spread across the Earth, simultaneously redeeming and ending the once world-threatening Kaiju.

Taiga attempted to convince Tregear to return to the path of light, but he finds those claims rubbish and attacks Taiga, forcing him to fight back. Taiga changed to Tri-Strium, which reminds Tregear of Taro. Taiga, Titas, Fuma and Hiroyuki put their powers together to fire the Quattro Squad Blaster, but Tregear made no attempt to defend himself and laughed maniacally as he was defeated.

Being unable to die because of his powers, Tregear's body had been restored after his previous defeat. However, the battle had caused the seal on Grimdo to come loose, freeing a portion of the monster from within himself. The New Generation Heroes sealed away Grimdo temporarily, at the cost of their ability to transform. Meanwhile, Tregear sent one of his illusions to Planet Borges to lure out Taro, who offered to help him. Instead, Tregear rejected his offer and told him that Grimdo was heading to the Earth where Taiga is, making him fly off in a hurry. Kirisaki (Tregear) had waited for Taro on the Earth, and faced off against Homare Soya, Hikaru Raido and Sho, who had located him, taking the opportunity to tell them of his true plan. Kirisaki vanishes after Grimdo managed to possess Taro, and somehow became undetectable.

Hiroyuki, Katsumi and Isami confronted Kirisaki after finding Taro's location. Kirisaki transforms into Tregear to transform and fight against the Tri-Squad while summoning Hellberus, Segmeger, Night Fang, Gigadelos and Gorothunder to fight off the New Generation Heroes, who had regained their powers from the Bracelets that Hiroyuki returned to them. After dealing with the monsters, the New Generation Heroes attempt to help Taiga restore Taro's consciousness, but are blocked by Tregear. Eventually, they succeed, causing Tregear to acknowledge that he has lost everything. Tregear then offered himself to Grimdo. His body broke down and was absorbed into the beast, restoring it to its full power. His consciousness was within the monster and controlled it, with a desire to destroy everything.

The Tregear-Grimdo fusion overwhelmed Taro and the New Generation Heroes, even in their strongest forms. Taro advised them to fuse via Taiga's Ultra Horns while he distracted Grimdo, allowing them to have the opportunity to fuse into Ultraman Reiga, who was strong enough to deflect all of Grimdo's attacks. At the climax of the battle, Reiga shot through Grimdo's central eye with the Reiga Ultimate Blaster. With a sorrowful voice, Tregear called out to Taro before he is destroyed along with Grimdo.
